Players who have turned out for both Sheffield clubs

Harper, who had spent ten years at Newcastle before moving to Hull has since joined the Toon’s fierce enemies, Sunderland, as back up.

Robinson meanwhile, formerly at Blackburn has done the same thing and ended up at Burnley.

In Sheffield, despite the intense rivalry between the two main clubs, quite a number of players have swapped blue and white for red and white and vice versa.

Here we take a look back at some of the players who have pulled on both Wednesday and United jerseys during their careers.

Leigh Bromby

Bromby was a product of Sheffield Wednesday's youth academy, making his Wednesday debut in December 2000. He would go on and make 100 appearances for the Owls, before his switch to the Blades in 2004.

The defender spent four years at United before signing for Watford in 2008. Bromby returned to United in 2009; first on loan from the Hornets, then signing on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Bromby made a total of 122 appearances for the Blades during his two spells at the club, scoring seven goals.

Terry Curran

The tricky winger signed for the Owls in 1978 from Southampton. During his time at Wednesday he made 138 appearances for the club, scoring 39 goals - 24 of which came in Wednesday's promotion season from Division Three in 1979–1980.

Curran left Hillsborough in 1982, signing for the Blades for £100,000. He made 33 appearances for United and scored three goals, before moving to Everton.

Richard Cresswell

Cresswell signed for Wednesday in 1999 from York City. During his spell at S6, the striker made 31 appearances, scoring two goals.

He moved to the Blades on loan from Stoke City in 2009, and joined permanently in 2010. He made a total of 124 appearances, scoring 27 goals before rejoining York in 2013.

Carl Bradshaw

Sheffield Wednesday was Bradshaw's first club back in 1986. He would go onto to play for the Owls 32 times, scoring four goals, before joining Manchester City in September 1988, in a swap with Imre Varadi.

Bradshaw moved to Bramall Lane in 1989, where he went on to make 147 appearances for the Blades, finding the net eight times. He left United in 1994, signing for Norwich City.

Alan Quinn

Quinn began his playing career at Wednesday in 1997. He made over 150 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals, before signing on a free transfer to United in 2004.

During the Blades’ Premier League season in 2006–2007, the Irishman made 19 appearances. He played a total 97 games for United, scoring 11 goals.

Out of all the players in this list, Quinn is the only one to have scored for both teams in the Steel City derby.

Derek Geary

Geary joined the Owls in 1997. During his time at Hillsborough he made 121 appearances for the club and won the player of the season award for the 2001–2002 season.

He left Wednesday in 2004, signing for Stockport County, before returning to Sheffield to sign for the Blades in October that same year.

The feisty full back would go onto make 94 appearances for the Blades, including 26 during United's Premiership season in 2006–2007.

Jon-Paul McGovern

McGovern joined the Blades on loan from Scottish giants Celtic in 2002. He played 15 games for the club.

In 2004 he left Livingston and signed for the Owls and was a key part of the Owls' play-off winning side in 2005, scoring in both semi final and final.

He made a total of 53 appearances for Wednesday, scoring six goals.

Earl Barrett

Barrett played 15 times for Wednesday between 1998-2000. However before signing for the Owls, the former Manchester City defender made five appearances for United on loan from Everton.

Owen Morrison

The Northern Irishman began his senior career with the Owls in 1998. After 55 league appearances and eight goals in just under five seasons he joined United in 2003, playing just eight times for the Blades before signing for Stockport County.

Chris O'Grady

O'Grady signed for Wednesday in 2011, and his first goal for the club was in a 2–2 draw with the Blades. After playing 51 games at Hillsborough, scoring nine goals, the striker signed for South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in 2013.

O'Grady returned to the Steel City in 2014 where he played just four games for the Blades while on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion. He found the net once during his brief spell at Bramall Lane.

Danny Batth

Batth made just one appearance for Sheffield United while on loan back in 2010.

He played 55 times for Wednesday from 2011-2012 while on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, finding the back of the net twice.

Franz Carr

Carr made 12 appearances for the Owls in 1989 while on loan from Nottingham Forest. He signed for United in January 1993 and made 19 appearances for the club, scoring five goals.

Brian Marwood

Signed by Wednesday for £115,000 in 1984, Marwood went on to make 128 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals.

He left the Owls in 1988 to sign for Arsenal, before being sold to United for £350,000 in September 1990. During his three seasons at S2 Marwood only made 22 appearances, scoring just three goals.

Keith Treacy

Treacy joined United on a six-month loan deal in July 2009 from Blackburn Rovers. He played 16 games for the Blades, scoring once.

In 2012 he made just seven appearances for the Owls while on loan from Burnley, scoring once.

Imre Varadi

Varadi joined United in 1978 playing 10 games and scoring four goals.

He went on to have two spells with the Owls; firstly in 1983, where he made 76 appearances and hitting the back of the net 33 times. He returned in 1988 where he played 22 games, scoring three.

Alan Warboys

Warboys began his career at Doncaster Rovers before moving to Wednesday in 1968. He played 79 games for the Owls, scoring 13 times.

He had a brief spell at United in 1972, playing just seven games.

Dean Windass

During his time at Middlesbrough Windass was loaned out to both Sheffield clubs. First was the Owls in 2001 where he made just two appearances for the club.

In 2002 the Hull-born forward had a successful loan spell at the Blades where he scored three goals in four appearances. He signed permanently for United in 2003, playing 16 games and scoring three goals.

David Ford

Sheffielder Ford joined Wednesday as an 18-year-old in 1963. He made his debut in the 1965–1966 season against Sunderland, where he became the first ever substitute used by Wednesday in a league match.

Ford signed for the Blades on January 1971 from Newcastle United. He made 21 league appearances for United and netted twice.

David Johnson

Johnson had loan spells at both Sheffield clubs. In 2002 he made seven appearances for Wednesday, scoring two goals. He played just four games for the Blades in 2005.

Tony McMahon

McMahon played 15 games for the Owls during a loan spell from Middlesbrough.

He left the Riverside in 2012 and signed a two–year deal with the Blades. He played 61 games for United, finding the back of the net twice.

Wilf Rostron

Rostron joined Wednesday on a free transfer in January 1989. During his eight months at Hillsborough he made just seven appearances. While at the Owls he was loaned to United, a move which was made permanent in November of that year.

Rostron went on to make 36 appearances for the Blades, scoring three times.

Bernard Shaw

Shaw began his career at the Blades as an apprentice making his first team debut during 1963. The full back went onto play 136 games for United before signing for Wolves in 1969.

In 1973 Shaw returned to Sheffield, signing for the Owls. He made 104 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

Carl Robinson

While at Portsmouth, Robinson was loaned out to both Sheffield clubs.

In 2003 he played four games at Wednesday scoring one goal. He played five games for United in 2004.

Simon Stainrod

Sheffield-born Stainrod began his career with the Blades in 1975. He spent four season at Bramall Lane, making 75 appearances and scoring 14 goals, before moving to Oldham Athletic in Match 1979.

In 1985 the striker signed for the Owls, playing 15 games and scoring twice before being sold to Aston Villa later that year.

Neil Ramsbottom

Goalkeeper Ramsbottom played 18 games for the Owls from 1975-76. He signed for United in 1978, making just two appearances.

Paul Heald

Goalkeeper Heald began his career at United back in 1987. However he didn't make an appearance for the club and moved onto Leyton Orient in 1988.

In 2002 he signed on loan at the Owls from Wimbledon. He made just five appearances.
