Plans for library

As an able-bodied person, I am very fond of the Central Library/Graves Art Gallery building. However, I recognise that access is problematic for many, and that the building does not meet modern standards in that respect.

Ideally, I would wish that the existing building could be adapted to make access easy for all. If this is not possible, then there are two key criteria which should be fulfilled when the library complex is relocated.

1. The new complex should be located within the city centre, so that it is accessible to all by only one bus or tram journey.

2. A period of closure is inevitable while books and other resources are transferred from the old libraries to the new facilities. However, the length of this period should be minimised; it should most certainly be measured in days, or at most weeks, and not months.

I consider both these criteria to be essential if the service offered to the people of Sheffield is not to be diminished. Is the council able to make these commitments?
