Plans in for £4 million transformation of former Sheffield bar and restaurant

Plans to transform a former Sheffield bar and restaurant into apartments have moved a step closer after plans were submitted for a £4 million transformation of the site.

Developer Primesite UK has submitted a planning application to convert the former Hanrahan's bar, a building last occupied by the seafood chain Loch Fyne across from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Glossop Road.

The Grade-II listed building would be transformed into 27 one, two and three-bedroom apartments, subject to approval by Sheffield Council.

Scott Hinchliffe, director of Primesite UK, said: “It’s a shame that such a distinctive building has been unoccupied for so long, so I’m obviously delighted we’ve been able to acquire the buildings and get this once in a lifetime opportunity to repurpose these iconic buildings into a scheme that is really special.’

“The location and configuration as well as the impact of structural issues means the building is no longer suitable for a restaurant.

“Our architects have come up with an exciting scheme of 1,2 and 3 Bed Apartments that re-uses the majority of the building’s remaining internal structures, with the dramatic entrance and new build block to complement the heritage of the historic façade and service these high spec/high-tech apartments in this amazing location.’

Primesite UK has worked with architects Cartwright Packard and CODA Planning to draw up the plans and, subject to planning permission, the transformation is expected to be completed in 2020.

But campaigners have objected to the proposal and Hallamshire Historic Buildings called for a survey of the building’s internal features to be carried out before a decision is made.

The site is just one of a trio of prominent places Primesite UK is revamping in upmarket areas of the city to deliver dozens of new homes as part of a £12 million scheme.

Botanical House, the former Wake Smith offices on Clarkehouse road, has been restored to form 11 apartments, ranging from one to three-bedroom properties, while a modern five-bedroom home has been put up at the back.

The developments is almost 100 per cent sold, prior to completion.

And the former Gilders VW car showroom at the junction of Ecclesall Road, Ecclesall Road South and Psalter Lane will become four retail/leisure units and 10,000 sq ft office space for accountancy firm Brown McLeod , along with eight luxury townhoues built to the rear of the site.
