Planners asked to approve new home next to historic priory site

A new bungalow could be built alongside Barnsley's historic Monk Bretton Priory, with planners being assured the development would not affect the setting of the ruins.

Barnsley Council is being asked for permission to put a dormer bungalow on the site of the old Burton Grange nursery school in Abbey Lane at Lundwood, which would mean the new building standing around 30 metres from the closest remains on the priory site, the former gatehouse and administrative buildings.

But that is no closer than the former nursery, which was demolished in the past, leaving the site in a semi-derelict condition.

Documents submitted to the council by applicant Glyn Barlow state the development would improve the area because of the currently neglected state of the site, with the new building to be constructed in stone which would match the priory's remains.

The application documents state: 'The proposed house is sensitively designed and sited and there is no reason to believe that it will detract from the site of the priory or cause any other harm.'

A decision will be taken later.
