A man was left fighting for life after being hit by a car close to Sheffield city centre.

Police confirmed a blue Mercedes 'A' class car was in collision with two pedestrians in Headford Street, Broomhall, just after midnight last night.

A 23-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police described his condition this morning as 'serious but stable'.

A second pedestrian, a 24-year-old man, received medical attention for minor injuries at the scene.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody.

Dramatic pictures and video footage has emerged in the immediate aftermath of the incident which shows a vehicle crashed into the side of a building.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "it was a Mercedes A class car and he had smashed into the garage at Pinders.

"There was around six police and two ambulances there after it happened.

"The people living on the same side of the building heard the smash of the car."

A woman who works in a cafe near the scene said she had heard it was a 'hit-and-run' incident but police said this was not the case as the driver was arrested at the scene.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "The scene of the incident has been secured and forensic investigations are continuing.
