Superman, Captain America and Spiderman were just some of the comic book crusaders who came to the aid of Sheffield Hospitals Charity at a fundraiser today (Sunday, May 21).

Families got into character to complete a sponsored 2.5km or 4km walk, buggy push, toddle or trike for Jessops Superheroes.

Their efforts have already generated more than £25,000 for the city's Jessop Wing and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with further cash expected to flood in before the final total is announced.

This was the charity's fourth annual event and the money raised will help enhance services for more than 7,200 babies born each year at the hospital, where many entrants believe the true superheroes can be found.

After the walk, participants enjoyed entertainment from Minimovez Pre School Fitness, Rachel’s Magical Entertainment, Hullabaloobell parties and DuoCall’s Superman Penalty Shootout. There was also face painting, a balloon maker, crafts and a ukulele workshop.

Isla Denoon, fundraising team manager at Sheffield Hospitals Charity, said: "These events are always so humbling – the sheer amounts of people who take part because the Jessop Wing has played a part in their lives really make you think about what an amazing hospital we have here in Sheffield.

"This year we have record entries and we are well on track to smashing our fundraising target. We can’t thank everyone enough for the efforts they have made to raise funds for our tiniest patients."

The Jessop Wing is a purpose-built maternity hospital which supports thousands of families each year from Sheffield, Yorkshire and the rest of the UK, through all stages of pregnancy, from conception to care after birth.

It is also home to one of the country's largest and most specialised neonatal intensive care units, providing critical care for 700 babies each year.
