Phone app offers NHS advice

SMARTPHONE users who need medical help can use a new app to find the right service.

South Yorkshire residents are being urged to download the NHS Choose Well app, which includes details of the nearest A&E departments, GPs, NHS walk-in centres, dentists and pharmacies.

First aid and emergency advice, plus reminders about health appointments and medication, are also available on the tool.

Paul Johnstone, NHS North of England director for public health, said: “Every year, especially in winter, we see people turning up to A&E who would be able to get the care they need elsewhere in the NHS.

“The app enables people to find the nearest and most appropriate NHS service, wherever they may be in Yorkshire.”

The app can also aid people who need medical help while visiting family and friends during the festive season.

Mr Johnstone said: “It is especially useful if you are visiting a part of the region you are unfamiliar with. Over Christmas if you are paying a visit to family or friends, who live in an area you don’t know, download the app and it will help you find the NHS service you need with the simple touch of a button.”

The app can be downloaded from iTunes, the Android market or via the NHS Yorkshire and the Humber website.

Richard Powell, a Yorkshire iPhone user, said: “I’ve had the app a while and it’s really useful. It helps me decide which service to use and gives details of how to get there.”
