Stendel had criticised his team's attitude after they laboured to a midweek draw against bottom-club Plymouth and they responded in stunning style with a 4-0 win at Peterborough.

Posh, who occupy second position in League One, were blown away by a brilliant Reds performance as George Moncur and Jacob Brown scored either side of Brad Potts' impressive double.

It was light years away from their limp showing against Argyle and sends a strong message out to the rest of the division that Barnsley are a team to fear.

'It was a very good performance from my team and I am very proud of the performance,' Stendel said.

'All the players gave their best. We said we needed a very good attitude from the first moment and all the players showed that.

'We spoke about what we can do better in the next game (after Plymouth). I think we are a good team, we have a lot of quality and very good players, but in every game we need the right attitude and it was the perfect result today.

'It was the best reaction that they could have showed. I am very happy they showed it, not for me, but for the fans and also for themselves. They can play so good when the attitude is right. It is important that we learn every week.'

The key moment arguably came in their own penalty area as skipper Adam Davies produced a fine save to keep out Ivan Toney's 13th-minute penalty, which was awarded after Dimitri Cavare fouled Joe Ward.

Less than two minutes later, the Reds were in front as Moncur, as Posh loanee last season, converted a loose ball.

Potts lit up London Road with a stunning free-kick in first-half injury time, rifling in a 20-yard effort and then added a second on the hour when he rolled home.

Brown, who came on for the injured Kieffer Moore, put late gloss on the win with a fine finish into the bottom corner.

The rest of League One will surely have surely have sit up and taken notice at the way Stendel's men destroyed a promotion candidate on their own turf.

And the German efficiently summed up how they were able to do it.

'Peterborough were not so bad, we were just so good.'
