People’s satisfaction with Sheffield roads increasing, claims report

There has been a 30 per cent increase in satisfaction levels with how the city’s roads are maintained overall, according to the National Highways and Transport Network.

The NHT Network surveyed more than 3,000 Sheffield households and found that since the start of the Streets Ahead project in August 2012, year on year the public’s satisfaction with the road network had improved.

The survey also reveals more people are satisfied with the other highway services that are carried out as part of the Streets Ahead project than they were in 2012.

Coun Terry Fox, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “I am very pleased to see the results from the NHT survey and to see that the public are seeing the benefits of the works that are taking place across the city.

“The condition of the roads has been one of the main issues that have been raised with all councillors.

“I know that the Streets Ahead works can be disruptive but I hope that many residents will read these survey results and know that a small amount of disruption will be worth it in the long term.”

Results from the survey also showed there was an increase of 43 per cent in people’s satisfaction with the condition of road surfaces and a 27 per cent increase in the speed of repairs to damaged roads.

But the report was mocked on social media as some Sheffielders remain unhappy with the service.

Stevo B, who lives in the S6 area, said: “It’s like driving over the surface of the moon, the amount of potholes in my area.”

Dean Corbridge said of Streets Ahead: “They only seem to be bothered with street lights and footway resurfacing, the roads in Sheffield are a disgrace.”

He added that the survey must be a late April fools.

Sheffield resident Stephen Bedford also rejected the report and said: “Can’t say I agree. The Hillsborough pinch point improvement on Penistone Road is a complete and utter disaster.”

Twitter user Adam said he has had to replace two tyres this year alone and added: “All they do is patch the holes which last a few weeks then the holes get worse.”
