Mia Virgo-Cox, a pupil at Bradfield School, decided to donate over 15 inches of her hair to the Little Princess Trust as a way to celebrate her 13th birthday on July 19.

She was hugely proud of her long locks, which had previously gone down further than the length of her back, but taking it one step further she also decided to raise funds for the charity.

Mia, who lives with her mum Becky and 10-year-old brother Kit in Stannington, has seen what cancer can do to an adult so wanted to help children feel better through their illness She lost a close family friend, Max Bygrave, to the disease in 2018.

Writing on her fundraising page, she said: “The ordeal of cancer as a child must be horrible and turbulent, and can make them feel isolated and sad.

"Having your hair fall out must be even worse. £550 is the amount of money it costs to make a wig out of human hair. If I reach my target, I can give the Little Princess Trust enough money to take my hair and transform it into a wig. Just being able to plait your hair could bring joy to an otherwise dark period of life.”

Mia braved the chop at Hair By Christmas, in Broomhill, on July 16 and has smashed her initial target with the latest total on her Just Giving page now standing at £785 which will not only pay to make her hair into a wig but can also fund vital research into childhood cancers.
