Buying for your mum and dad is relatively easy and straightforward – but when it comes to buying for your grandma, the decisions can be a little more tricky.

Well, that certainly seems to be the case if you go down to Tesco for your festive greetings this year.

A widely shared tweet by retail guru Steve Dresser shows the fantastic array of names the supermarket giant has come up with when it comes to choosing a card for your gran this Christmas.

Nan, Nanna, Nanny, Nana and Nannie – the retailer seems to have covered all bases with a display card guiding shoppers to the right part of the rack.

Or has it?

Several Sheffielders have picked up on the fact that Tesco seems to have missed out the popular city term of affection for grandma – and that’s nannan.

“My Sheffield nannan would have hated a nanna/nana card,” wrote one Twitter user in response to the picture.

And another wrote: “I’m from Sheffield and we use Nannan.”

And it isn't the first time this problem has reared its ugly head.

Back in 2017, shopper Daniel Fox voiced his frustration on Twitter.

In front of him were rows upon rows of heartfelt cards; all wishing the customer's nan/nanna/grandma a merry Christmas.

He tweeted: "Biggest annoyance at card shops when you’re from Sheffield, none of them say nannan!"

Should greeting card companies be producing their own Sheffield-specific range of cards? We certainly think so.
