What under 25s hope for Christmas and New years

Young people in Sheffield are looking forward to returning home and spending time with their families this Christmas. And they are also hoping for a more secure political climate in the new year.

That’s the message from the young people we asked across our city as they make plans for the festive holiday.

Sheffield Phd student Thyra Elsasser said she will be going to Switzerland this Christmas.

She added: “I’m hoping for my family to be healthy, the current political climate to improve and that strikes at the university will be successful.”

Hannah Nichols and Victoria Breach, both aged 18, said they are also looking forward to being at home with their families after their first time away from home since they finished secondary school.

Victoria said: “I’m not really expecting anything special this Christmas - I still get gifts but they are more practical gifts that are helpful and that I will use everyday, like pots and pans.”

Hannah added: “I’ve really enjoyed my first semester here in Sheffield so I’m really looking forward to coming back.”

Another eighteen-year-old, Selina Moore said she knows exactly what she is getting for this Christmas - the new Fenty Beauty make up box from her boyfriend.

When asked what she hopes for in the New Year she said: “Without being too political, I’m hoping the Conservatives will do something about the climate. I’m hoping for more holidays too - I’d like to go to Brazil. I want to go for the food, culture and weather.”

Hamza Shariff, aged 22, said he will be looking forward to celebrating his birthday and is planning on more travelling in the new year. “I’m going to Egypt in February. I’m hoping I can go to Japan as well, that is my dream holiday destination,” he added.

Jasmine Alakija, aged 18, said she is hoping for her shorthand exams to go well along with her friend Miette Dsouza who said she will be returning home to Dubai where the weather is about 24 degrees in winter.

Monique Wong, aged 18, said she will be going back home to Hong Kong this year for her Christmas holiday and she is not expecting anything special for Christmas but spending more time with her friends and family.
