In the footage, the kind-hearted residents are spotted helping determined funeral directors up the hill to Rotherham Crematorium and Cemetery in East Herringthorpe, Ridgeway.

Luckily, they were successful in their mission as the hearse can be seen going onward in its journey thanks to the crowd who came to its rescue.

Michelle Mulcahy, who lives nearby, filmed the scene and said it had restored her faith in humanity.

She uploaded the video to Facebook where it has since been shared thousands of times, with dozens praising those who worked hard to get the hearse on its way.

Michelle said: “It was my son that saw it first and as soon as I went to my window it just melted my heart. I didn’t intend for the video to go viral, I just shared it for friends to see, it was only till a friend said set to public then it went viral.

"[It] just made me think how amazing community spirit is and in a world that’s falling apart it put my faith in people again seeing them coming together to make sure that coffin got to where it needed to be, it’s beautiful really.”
