Coun Peter Price, who has represented the Shiregreen and Brightside ward on Sheffield Council for 48 years, is cycling more than 400 miles from Saint-Malo in France on the Tour de Bretagne from June 8 to 17.

Coun Price, the longest-serving city councillor in Sheffield's history, said: “At the age of 82, together with my son Peter junior, we will be cycling for eight days continuously through Brittany averaging about 50 miles a day, taking in Fougeres, Rennes, Ploermel, Quintin, St. Brieuc and back to Saint-Malo, using mainly river and canal paths.

“It promises to be an extremely testing physical challenge, for me at least.

“However, I am doing this in order to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support.

“And, while it is tough, it is nothing to what cancer sufferers and their families have to go through and I am sure you will agree with me, it is for an excellent cause.”

Since losing his wife, Janet, from the disease in 2000, Peter has successfully completed several cycling challenges, including 400 miles across Ecuador, coast to coast across Mexico, cycling across Cuba and many more over the last 20 years – raising more than £100,000.

Coun Price said: One in three of us will suffer from cancer at some stage of our lives, which means that, even if we do not personally contact the disease ourselves, we will know someone very close who has.

“Many of us know from personal experience what a wonderful service Macmillan provides.

“All are working towards the day when everyone will have ready access to the best information, treatment and care for cancer.

“They fund specialist Macmillan nurses, doctors and buildings for cancer treatment and care and give grants for patients in financial difficulties.

“I will never forget the wonderful care and support the Macmillan nurses gave my wife when she was very ill.”
