Two dead in Meadowhall river crash: Here's all we know so far

Two young men died after the car they were in crashed into the River Don at Meadowhall last night.

The men, aged 20 and 24, are believed to have been the only occupants of the car involved in the crash, which took place at about 7.10pm on Saturday, January 30.

This is what we know about the incident so far:

*The two men have not been formally identified by police but have been named in social media posts by family and friends as Josh and Tommy Hydes.

*South Yorkshire Police said the vehicle had entered the River Don off Meadowhall Way.

*A police spokesperson said the emergency services were at the scene within minutes and entered the water to help.

*The tow men involved were sadly pronounced dead later at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

*A police spokesperson said witness claims of a pursuit involving the car containing the two men are false.

A force spokesperson said: "South Yorkshire Police would like to clear up any confusion regarding this incident and comments being made.

"The vehicle involved in this incident was not being pursued or followed by the police.

*Family members have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.
