These are the inspirational words that residents at Nightingale Care Home in Ecclesfield are choosing to live by this month, after a difficult few weeks.

As lockdown restrictions continue to keep family members away, and a number of residents have sadly died, manager Julie Wright says she has been left amazed by people’s strength and positivity in dark times.

“During our lockdown we have sadly had some residents become very ill and pass away,” she said this week.

“However our residents have been positive and kept our staff entertained as usual with a variety of activities within the home.

“We celebrated Easter by making easter bonnets and holding a parade, which was linked live on the internet to relatives at home, while they are sadly unable to visit.

“We are happy to try any new activities within the home.”

Julie adds: “My residents are like Captain Tom; they have been through wars before, so are really positive, and have the mantra ‘get on with it,’ and make of life what you can.

“As one of my residents said recently, turn that frown upside down - it works wonders.”

Julie also said that staff working in care homes across the city, and the country, are setting the tone during a difficult time, and deserve all of our gratitude.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all care staff for their work during what is a very busy period, physically and emotionally, while still keeping a positive stance and making daily life as normal and happy as possible in our care homes.

“They are all, without doubt, exceptional and loving people.

“The residents and relatives are also our heroes and have been so positive throughout.

“Onwards to VE Day, planning decorations and a party, and a big salute to Captain Tom.”
