Tributes to young men who died in Meadowhall river crash tragedy as pair are named locally

The men, aged 20 and 24, are believed to have been the only occupants of the car involved in the crash, which took place at about 7.10pm last night (Saturday, January 30).

They were sadly pronounced dead later at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital and family members have been informed.

The two men are yet to be formally identified by police, but have been named by family and friends on Facebook as Josh and Tommy Hydes.

Brodes Sharpe posted on Facebook: “Woken up to more awful news. RIP Josh Hydes and Tommy Hydes. I’m sure you’ll keep them busy up there!

"Rest easy up there boys. Thinking of all your family.”

Ricky Hobson posted: “Really can't believe what I am hearing this morning. R.I.P Josh lad! One of a kind you bro. Always takes the best. Fly high brother!”

Martin Byrne said on our Facebook page: “That’s terrible news, poor lads. And the family who have to deal with the ripple effect of this.”

Pat O'Brien posted: “So tragic, two more young lives lost. RIP and condolences to their families at this sad time.”

Scott Cain posted on our Facebook page that it was ‘horrendous news’ and his thoughts with both families and friends.

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Police said: “At 7.10pm last night (30 January) police received reports that a vehicle had entered the river off Meadowhall Way in Sheffield.

“Two men aged 20 and 24 were taken to Northern General Hospital, where they were sadly pronounced dead.

"Family members have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.”

Police added that witness claims of a pursuit involving the car containing the two men are false.

A force spokesperson said: "South Yorkshire Police would like to clear up any confusion regarding this incident and comments being made.

"The vehicle involved in this incident was not being pursued or followed by the police.

"It was a very distressing incident for all involved.

"All emergency services were at the scene within minutes and entered the water to help."
