He is credited as being a mentor, friend and coach to the hundreds of players who have passed through the club - many of whom he stayed in contact with.

Announcing Alan’s death on Facebook, Sheffield Hallam Men’s Rugby Union said: “Known as ‘AG’ he was an inspirational and dedicated figurehead who supported players through good times and bad. He encouraged a great number of players to join in and take part in rugby.

"He worked hard with coaches, players and the university to provide professional, safe, and supportive environment. He always encouraged players to do their best, and was rewarded by seeing players progress and fulfil their potential, and he kept in touch with many players long after they left university.

"Alan was extremely proud of the work that he put into the club, and was always extremely proud to be associated with the club. Over the years he gave up a lof of his own time to attend training sessions, matches, and meetings for the club.

"He believed strongly in the ethos of Hallam Rugby: to be supportive and to help those in need, both in the club, and in the community.”

Ryan Amos, Club and Performance Sports Manager at Sheffield Hallam, said Alan’s impact on the lives of many of the players could not be overstated.

He added: “For him it was more than sport. He was just so selfless, he always put everyone else first.

"His dedication was just incredible... it didn’t matter where he went, he was always helping people out. The club are absolutely devastated and he’ll be incredibly missed.

"We’re certainly going to be doing something for him from a university perspective and the old boys are coming together to see what we can do.”

Plans for any future celebrations will posted on the SHURUFC Facebook page.
