This was the most moving moment of today's incredible Sheffield 10K

Two sets of runners – one close to finishing, the other almost halfway - clapped on those heading in the opposite direction in the six mile race from the city centre, to Nether Green and back.

A downpour of heavy rain at the start failed to diminish the spirits of either the thousands of runners or spectators, who donned raincoats to hand out high fives, encouragement and sweets to those completing the fourth challenge in the city.

Many runners took part for good causes, or in memory of loved ones, with tens of thousands of pounds raised.

Fancy dress costumes were as creative as ever, with a pair of waterlogged Peppa Pigs battling on regardless, and Sheffield’s indomitable spirit shone through.

There was also a marriage proposal at the finish line – and organisers confirmed she had said “yes”.

Mandy Hepworth, Asda Foundation co-ordinator, said: “The event has developed into wonderful 10K that does so much to raise funds. “Congratulations to all the runners who turned out today to make the Asda Foundation Sheffield 10K such a success.”

A new course record was set by speedy Sheffield runner Andrew Heyes, finishing in 30 minutes, 44 seconds.

First woman, Elaine Livera, finished in 37: 41.

Hundreds of runners were also taking part in the Sheffield 10K Corporate Challenge, a race within a race in which companies and other organisations competed to be crowned the event’s fastest team.

Some of the biggest cheers of the day were for youngsters in the Arena Group Sheffield Mini and Junior Run, a fun event for children aged 3-14.

Adrian Fitzpatrick, Arena Group managing director, said: “All the youngsters who crossed the finish line of the mini and junior run can wear their medals with pride.

“Not only did they meet the challenge, their efforts benefitted charity so it really was a win-win.”

The road race is in the Asda Foundation series, part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity by tackling a string of endurance challenges despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.
