South Yorkshire men shave heads to raise money for NHS staff fighting coronavirus

More than 50 men across South Yorkshire have now taken the plunge and shaved their head – raising £6,039 for NHS Charities Together.

It is a cause close to the 26-year-old’s heart as his sister works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and is dealing with the fall out from the pandemic first hand.

Danny, who hopes to raise £10,000 for the charity, explained how it feels that so many people got involved.

"It's amazing that we have raised so much, I have had to move the target up and the more we raise, the more people we will be able to help.

"We are just trying to keep it going as long as possible and keep the support for workers up.

"There's no chance I ever thought we would raise this much.”

The challenge which started last Friday, consists of people setting monetary targets among their friends – where they agree to shave their head if the group reach a new target.

Danny shared how the competition has been a source of entertainment while people are stuck in their homes, self isolating.

"Some of my friends had really long hair so it's quite a big commitment for them,” he added.

"Loads of people have been setting targets they never thought we would reach, it's quite funny seeing the look on people's face when they realise they have to go through with it now.”

The Social Work England employee originally set the charity target at £1,000 to generate some money for worthy cause, after he shaved his head out of boredom.

He’s encouraging more people to be brave and get involved with the challenge.

“We thought with all the bad stuff going on it's nice to do something to make a difference, it's just nice to do something to help the people that are risking their lives for us.

"Your hair is going to grow back and we have all the time in the world now.

"It's just nice to give some recognition to those people.”
