77 beers were entered into the competition, with each category winner being put forward to compete for the overall title of Supreme Champion.

For the first time in the history of the competition, which has taken place since 1992, experts were unable to differentiate between Triple Point’s Debut IPA and Chantry Brewery’s Two Magpies Porter, with both judged to offer ‘perfect examples’ of their beer styles.

Other South Yorkshire breweries performing well on the evening saw Don Valley’s Gongoozler life the title of best stout, Abbeydale Brewery’s Absolution take the Premium Bitter category, Sheffield Brewery’s Get Thi’Sen Outdooerz won the Session bitter category, whilst Stancill Brewery’s Ginger Pale won the speciality category and as well as the overall bronze title.

This year’s Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival takes place at Magna between February 27-29 and takes a step back in time to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

It features an exhibition looking at the role the region played in the evolution of flight, as well as giving visitors the chance to experience life inside the cockpit of fighter plane, which has been loaned to the festival by the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum.

Festival organiser and Chairman of Rotherham CAMRA, Steve Burns, responsible for organising the competition, said: “All beers are tasted blind and follow a strict judging criteria.

“The success of South Yorkshires breweries within the competition illustrates the strength and depth of beers currently being produced in the region, and they proved to be very worthy winners.”
