Shocking footage shows driver hitting cyclist at busy Sheffield roundabout
This alarming footage shows a car drive straight into a cyclist at a Sheffield city centre roundabout.
The video, which was shared by Sitwell Cycling Club shows a a silver car fly into one of its members at the West Bar Roundabout on February 15.
The driver clearly shows no intention to slow down or stop, despite the cyclist coming from its right – and the cycling club is now appealing for potential witnesses after contacting the police.
The club has since said the cyclist is OK and has ‘a few cuts and bruises’.
Sitwell Cycling Club said: “On Monday 15th February at 7am, club member Chris Hague was hit by a car on West Bar Roundabout in Sheffield whilst commuting to work.
“As you can see from the footage the driver made no attempt to stop. This has been reported to South Yorkshire Police.
"Chris is fine, all things considered. Few cuts and bruises but nothing serious. His bike took most of the beating.
“If you witnessed this and have any information about the vehicle involved or know which direction it travelled after the roundabout please get in touch.”
The junction is already in the process of being transformed into a ‘Dutch-style’ roundabout to give preference to cyclists and pedestrians, and hopefully deter this type of event.
The new layout would feature an almost completely segregated cycle lane as well as pedestrian crossings on all entrances.
A spokesperson for Connecting Sheffield said the roundabout at West Bar ‘will give cycling and walking priority over motor traffic at junction crossings’.
