Sheffielders have mixed feelings about non mask wearers

Sheffielders feel divided about shoppers not wearing masks in shops and supermarkets - some say people are being too judgemental while others say they are turning to online shopping now.

From July 24 in England, wearing a face covering became mandatory in shops and supermarkets, as well as other public places.

However, some people in Sheffield have told how they have seen more shoppers not following government guidelines, particularly shoppers not wearing face masks and also not social distancing, which has sparked a lot of debate.

Amy Will said: “I'm one of those in the middle ground of 'it makes me feel annoyed and unsafe but at the same time, I know some people are exempt due to medical conditions so I don't judge or challenge them’.”

Government advice gives some people exemptions from wearing masks due to medical reasons which may not be visible and some believe that people are being too judgemental about it.

Terri-ann Hargreaves said: “What has this world come to though, seriously, shaming people for not wearing a mask.”

This has led to some exempt mask wearers forcing themselves to wear masks in order to avoid being questioned.

Jo Sykes explained: “My son has Autism but wears the mask even though he really struggles because of the looks he gets if he doesn't!! Yes he could wear his lanyard and stand out but he wants to fit in. I think it's awful how people judge others.”

Other exempt mask wearers have chosen to avoid the shops altogether.

Nanny Mcdebz, who has asthma and copd, said: “I would wear a mask but I get panic attacks because I can’t breathe and also because people give you looks so I don’t go to the shops anymore.”

Staff members are currently not required to wear masks but customers do and this is something that many do not agree with.

Michael Johnson said: “Shouldn’t be debated - should be compulsory for all staff and customers with no entry without one and certainly no service. Is it that hard?”

Pip Dickinson told how she wears a mask all day, every day in her job within healthcare and believes ‘it should be across the board’.

People have also criticised mask wearers who do not wear their masks properly.

Joanne Hylands has spoken of her annoyance on the matter, saying it ‘defeats the object’.

She said: “Shielders are out shopping now.... People need to show more respect and do their bit.”

It comes down to an individual’s choice whether they follow the rules or not, however, some are adamant that they will not wear a mask.

Dyane Tandy has not worn a mask yet and added that she ‘won't be doing either!’
