The community spirit is alive and well in Burnaby Street, Hillsborough- the occupants of which are being ‘brought closer together’ through difficult times.

Laura Ledger, a Burnaby Street resident, said: “We have organised a WhatsApp group with as many on the street as possible and have already found it very useful to help one another and our elderly residents.

“We have many keyworkers on our street and are pulling together as a team.

“We came up with the idea of putting a smiley face in the window so we can see which houses are part of the group and invite the ones that haven't yet joined.”

Laura added that the idea was already having a ‘positive impact’ and that residents had been helping each other by fetching shopping and medications.

“It’s brought us all a lot closer being able to put names to faces,” she said.“We are already planning a street party for when we can all get out and mingle.

“It's certainly brightened up people's daily walk looking at the faces, and tonight we will all be out clapping for all the keyworkers together, two metres apart of course.

“It's provided a great social network with around 42 of us on the group, there is always someone to talk to.”
