The three siblings - 10-year-old Hope, eight-year-old Hannah and seven-year-old Samuel Kelly - hope to cycle 280 miles in aid of TSE, a charity which supports a school and children’s home in Uganda.

The mammoth journey will see them travel a distance equivalent to the length of the immense Grand Canyon, a huge river valley in the US that is considered to be one of the wonders of the world.

They will be accompanied by mum Miranda Kelly, with the whole challenge expected to take around three months at a rate of between five and 12 miles a day.

Miranda, who attends the Sheffield Presbyterian Church along with Hope, Hannah and Samuel, said they wanted to remember how much harder the lockdown period was for others than for themselves.

She said: “When the coronavirus crisis hit and the parks all closed, we began cycling further and more often, then we thought wouldn’t it be great if we could do something to help those who are struggling at this time?

“The lockdown in Uganda has had an even bigger impact on the economy there so the need for help is more urgent than ever.

“The families the charity supports are unable to work and are facing starvation and the children’s home is struggling to feed the orphans.”

The Kelly family have set themselves a target of £1,000, with the team having raised £300 of the total already, and they have recently completed a quarter of the entire distance.

“We will chip away at the target a little at a time,” said Miranda.

“This week we had planned to be on holiday in Scotland - but obviously those plans have had to be postponed so we are trying to make the most of the weather to get as much cycling done as we can.

“These are uncertain times for everyone, but we are trying to use our lockdown to support those who have been hit the hardest.”
