Sheffield Sea Cadets’ executive officer, Sub-Lieutenant Chris Camps, said: “Our unit and city share a history with the Islands.

“Sadly, one of our cadets was killed during the conflict, and we have staff here who are veterans of 1982. Our city’s namesake, HMS Sheffield, was sunk protecting the Royal Navy fleet from air attack.”

Guests were treated to a performance from the Corps Band, and a tour of the Training Ship, and had a chance to meet the cadets.

Leona Roberts commented to the gathering how smart and disciplined the cadets were, and how the skills learned would be useful to them later in life.

The unit is looking for adult volunteers. The centre at the top of Rutland Road is open Mondays and Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm.
