From Saturday (June 20), all five of the recycling centres in the city will be open seven days a week, from 9am until 6pm. The extended opening hours will be in place until 30 September.

In order to ensure the safety of staff and the public during the COVID-19 Pandemic, social distancing measures continue to be in place, limiting the number of vehicles allowed on site at any one time.

The demand for the sites combined with the vehicle limits has resulted in significant queues. Extending the opening hours allows more people to visit and should reduce queuing times.

Councillor Mark Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Streetscene and Climate Change, said: “The extended hours alongside the vehicle limits in place to keep staff and the public safe, means that we can allow more people to use the sites, and safely, dispose of their waste.

“The fact that we have been able to keep our five Household Waste Recycling Centres open across Sheffield throughout the Covid-19 pandemic is a fantastic achievement, and this has been thanks to the continued hard work and commitment from our workforce, and for the patience shown by the vast majority of residents when using the sites during these difficult times.”

Although the extended opening hours will help to increase the number of residents able to visit the centres, vehicles will still be prevented for queuing outside the centres as this may cause potential danger for other road users trying to pass.

Drivers will initially be asked to move on by site staff, and failure to do so will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice. The Penalty Charge Notice requires payment of £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.

People with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste are asked to consider contacting a registered skip hire company.

The sites are: Longley Avenue West, Shirecliffe; Beighton Road, Woodhouse; Blackstock Road, Gleadless; Manchester Road, Deepcar; and Greaves Lane, High Green.
