Edwin Chomer, 31, who lives in Sharrow, planned to ride in the 102.6-mile Velo Birmingham event on Sunday, 21 June before it was cancelled because of coronavirus. But after being inspired by the likes of Captain Tom and Captain Tobias, he decided to complete the challenge in Sheffield’s Mount Pleasant Park to raise money for Sheffield Women's Aid, who provide refuge for victims of domestic violence.

Edwin, who works for Turner and Townsend as a quantity surveyor, has set himself a fundraising target of £1,000 and will begin cycling at 6am on Sunday, 28 June. While his training has seen him head out into the Peak District, he will have to make do with a much smaller route this weekend.

He said: “Each lap is 0.3 miles. Fitness-wise I will be alright, it’s just going to be that monotonous grind of going round and round.

“Other people were doing similar things for charity and I thought ‘Why not?’”

Edwin hopes to complete the distance by 4pm before heading home to relax with a beer.

“I’m more worried about people getting in my way a bit and running over small children,” he joked.

“Sheffield Women's Aid is a good charity and they are doing a lot of good work.”

Edwin’s wife Suzy added: “It’s wonderful, I’m really proud of him.”

So far, Edwin has raised £500 of his target. You can donate on his Virgin Money Giving page.
