“Just send us a private message by Wednesday to let us know how many portions you need.”

It said the free school meals will be ready for collection from The Workstation on Paternoster Row on Thursday (Oct 29) between 12pm and 3pm.

The Government had last week refused to support the footballer’s proposal in a parliamentary vote in a motion put forward by the Labour, saying that it was helping low-income families through the welfare system.

Sheffield City Council however has pledged to support thousands of children with free school meals with £15 per child, per week.

Around 22,000 children in Sheffield are currently in receipt of free school meals and will receive a voucher meaning the total cost will be £330,000.

Despite heavy criticism, South Yorkshire Conservative MPs who voted down Labour’s motion defended the decision, saying that the Government was supporting families through Universal Credit.

But this did not stop cafes, pubs and shops in Sheffield and South Yorkshire to take their own initiatives by giving away meals to children under 16 this week.
