The Yates Trophy was presented to Girlguiding Sheffield County by Dr Gurney Yates in memory of his wife who was a Commissioner of Sheffield Girl Guides, as they used to be known, for eight years.

He stipulated it should be contested every year, should be for Guides, and should always have an outdoor element.
