Sheffield Foodbank receives £20,000 donation from long-time supporter

Burngreave Foodbank has received a donation nearing £20,000 thanks to long-term Trussell Trust supporter Amey.

As part of an initiative set up by its parent company Ferrovial, Amey identified the Trussell Trust, which is working to end the need for food banks, as a charity on the front-line of the fight against Covid-19 and helped secure a £150,000 donation for the Trussell Trust and five of its foodbanks across in the UK.

The funds have been provided by Amey’s parent company Ferrovial through the Ferrovial Juntos COVID-19 fund, which is assisting organisations and governments to combat the coronavirus pandemic around the world.

Rachel Snow, Burngreave Foodbank administrator said: “The food bank serves one of the most deprived areas in Sheffield, operating from two centres and providing about 30 food parcels a week to families and individuals in the community, prior to the covid-19 outbreak.

“Since the UK went into lockdown we have seen demand for food soar and we are now getting between 70-80 referrals each week as the economic impact of job losses, school closures and delays in benefit payments is felt.

“This means the food bank is distributing more than 1,000 kilograms of food every week.

“We want to say a massive thank you to Ferrovial for its extremely generous donation of 22,000 Euros and to Amey which has arranged it.

“This will go a long way in helping the foodbank to buy in the supplies that are needed over the coming months to ensure that no one who needs food in this community goes hungry during this crisis.

“On behalf of every person who will receive this food we say thank you.”

Peter Bamfield, business director of Amey Sheffield Streets Ahead said: “We are delighted that one of the local food banks in Sheffield has received such a generous donation from Ferrovial.

“We are all keen supporters of the Trussell Trust here at Streets Ahead.
