Ann Wyatt said her daughter Alice saved £1,500 to buy the French Bulldog from a breeder they found online, picking him up from a location in Huddersfield.

However, after the puppy - who they named Frankie - was diagnosed with a neurological condition and then developed pneumonia, their vet said the only option was to put him down.

“It’s amazing how much you can love them in such a short space of time,” said Ann.

“The vet said his eyes were wider spaced than they should be which is an indicator of the brain condition but we weren’t to know.

“Call us naive for trusting people but this man took a lot of money from her and covered his tracks by using the pandemic as a reason to not let us see his other dogs.

“I want to warn others to be more vigilant than we obviously were. I’m sure there are many decent breeders out there but we fell foul to an unscrupulous one.”

Ann, who lives in Gleadless, said Frankie came to them with all the relevant paperwork and details of his jabs and microchip, but because of covid-19 the breeder insisted on meeting them away from his home address.

She said: “We had no reason not to trust them. He was gorgeous and we fell in love.

“The first night he had a bit of blood in his poo but thought nothing of it as it stopped. By the second day, he had a problem with his back leg and wasn’t eating so we took him to the vets.

“He went downhill so rapidly. He just keeled over and couldn’t get back up. The vet said the neurological condition was due to his breeding but the man’s phone has been switched off.”

Some of Alice’s friends are now raising money to help her buy another puppy from a reputable breeder. To find out more or contribute visit www.gofundme.com/f/mj7xa-puppy-love.
