There are many characteristics which make Sheffield different to any other city in the country.
For example, Sheffield is the home of the Snooker World Championship, the place where the rules of football were first written - and the home of iconic bands like Pulp, Arctic Monkeys and The Human League… the list goes on.
However, the Steel City isn’t just known for its sporting and musical heritage, it’s also a place where you’ll hear a range of different words, terms and phrases - that you are unlikely to hear anywhere else in the country - unless you happen to bump into another Sheffield native.
With that in mind, we asked our readers to list some of the words that only Sheffielders know.
How many of these do you use on a regular basis?

1. Mardy
Clare Winslip suggested: "Mardy." Mardy is a word used across the city which basically means sulky. It is well known to a wider audience since the Arctic Monkeys recorded the song Mardy Bum. Picture: Credit AdobeStock. | Getty
