Sheffield couple reveal problem that forced Kelham Island cafe to close seven months after opening

Kelly and her partner Charlie Curran launched their Australian inspired cafe bar on Alma Street, in June last year.

The couple previously ran Peppercorn, in Dore, and were inspired to open the airy, sunshine cafe after visiting Australian resort Noosa.

Sadly, the couple say that running the cafe became difficult, citing low footfall and lack of parking spaces as contributing factors.

The cafe which closed last week, employed six members of staff.

Noosa offered a slice of Australian sunshine in the often-grey city, with menu offerings such as baked eggs, freshly made waffles and power bowls.

Charlie said: “When we opened six months ago, we were excited about the project, and felt we were in the right area.

“We felt like we were jumping at the right spot, and at the right time for our clientele, as Kelham Island is called an up-and-coming area.

“We had a few good months in the summer, but the footfall in winter is almost non-existent.

“As the weather gets colder and wetter, Monday to Friday is like a ghost town.

“The biggest problem is parking – flats keep getting built and businesses keep moving in, but there’s nowhere to park.

“People rely on their cars, and don’t want to spend their lunch driving around to park.”

Charlie added that the couple are unsure of their next steps, and say the closure is still raw for them.
