Ramadan, which starts at the end of the week, is a special time for nearly two billion Muslims across the world.

It is normally a time of communal prayer, daytime fasting, night-time feasting, extensive socialising and acts of generosity and charity as Muslims reaffirm their faith in God – but this year it will be very different because of Covid-19.

A Sheffield City Council spokesperson said: “We wish all our Muslim communities a happy Ramadan.

“We recognise it’s traditionally a time for families and communities to come together but it needs to be different this year.

“Please stay at home to reduce the spread of coronavirus, protect the vulnerable and save lives.”

The Muslim Council of Britain has also published this guidance for celebrating Ramadan under lockdown.
