Sheffield City Council has explained why tweets announcing a number of city schools had closed were sent out – by accident.

The authority’s Twitter account announced the closure of a number of schools this lunchtime – but the messages were purely a test of the authority’s school closure alerts system.

A spokesman said: “We ask individual schools to test the automated school closure alert system every now and again and it appears several schools have done that.

“The schools aren’t closed.”
