This Sheffield community club is celebrating it's 100th birthday and an award win

A community club with has been bringing people together for a century has won a national award.

The Crookes Club celebrated its 100th birthday earlier this year, and now the staff there have reason to smile again as they have been have been listed as the number one nightlife venue in Sheffield on TripAdvisor for the whole of 2019.

Club president Peter Lonsdale said he was pleased the club had taken the top spot, but added the team hope to make it even better next year.

“We are not going to rest on our laurels we are planning bigger and better in 2020.”

The club was also recognised by The Club Mirror, the national magazine for Clubs and Institutes, as being the best entertainment club of 2019.

Competition was fierce from over 1,600 eligible clubs in the UK, and Crookes Club, on Mulehouse Road, was judged on the wide and varied entertainment it offers throughout the year.

In addition to the regular live music offered at the club every Saturday night, there are also film premiers, jazz, blues, folk, rock classical concerts, Ceilidh’s, pantomimes, birthday parties and charity fund raising events held there every year. It has also been used as a filming location for the forthcoming Sheffield Musical Jamie.

General manager Maurice Champeau said: “We are overjoyed at being recognised by The Club Awards. It makes all the hard work worthwhile. We made a decision to diversify the club over five years ago and this is now starting to show very positive results.”
