The huge tree now stands outside the town hall, awaiting its decorations.

This year there will be no Christmas lights switch on event due to the Covid-19 lockdown, however that does not mean the city will not be done up like it usually is.

The council wrote on social media: “We can’t have a big switch on event this year, but we can still have the lights!! So, that’s the tree in, decorations on their way.”

Residents of Sheffield welcomed the tree and encouraged people to enjoy celebrating a ‘different’ Christmas this year.

One wrote: “Christmas will be different this year for sure but we can still make it magical.”

And another commented: “Why not get all schools/care homes etc involved in making decorations for tree.”
