The Children’s Hospital Charity was awarded one of the top prizes in Persimmon Homes’ Building Futures campaign, and the donation will support the appeal to redevelop the Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The ward provides treatment for cancer and blood disorders in children from babies through to 18-year-olds in South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire, but sees patients from across the UK for chemotherapy, operations and bone marrow transplants.

Catherine Foster, trusts fundraising manager at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We are over the moon to win this amazing amount of money and we’d like to say a huge thank you to Persimmon Homes and to everyone who voted daily, shared and encouraged their friends and family to join in – we couldn’t have done it without you.

“Our plan is to completely transform the Cancer and Leukaemia Ward making the environment far more pleasant for children to receive life-saving treatment and to recover peacefully.

"The works will comprise en-suite bedrooms with park views and facilities for parents, as well as a new playroom, teenage room and classroom.”

Persimmon Homes handed out more than £1 million in cash prizes to organisations across the UK as part of the campaign, which encouraged applications in three categories – health, education & arts, and sports.

The first, second and third prize winners in each category were decided by a public vote with around 400,000 votes cast.

Tracy Davison, company secretary for Persimmon Plc, said: “The Building Futures scheme has been a great success and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work of so many organisations supporting young people in our communities.

“We have been overwhelmed by both the response to the competition, and the hard work and dedication of those involved within all the groups and we are delighted that The Children's Hospital Charity was one of the big winners.”

Two further organisations in Doncaster each received £5,000; Austerfield Study Centre, an outdoor education centre for disadvantaged children, plans to expand and create new challenges and services, while female rugby club, Thornensians Lionesses, plans to increase coaching sessions to

offer free sessions in local schools.
