Sheffield businesses chip in to help young homeless people

Sainsbury’s, Asda, Dunelm, and Price Check have all made donations to help Nomad Opening Doors with their Home for the Holidays campaign, to ensure that tenants have enough food, bedding and toiletries.

Nomad knows that a time of celebration can also be a time of desperation for some. Relationships break down and young adults find themselves homeless when conditions outside are at their worst.

“This year has been different to anything that has gone before but what hasn’t changed is the kindness and generosity of our local community, said Nomad Opening Doors fundraiser Laura Baker.

“Our partner businesses have ensured that our tenants have more than just a place to stay this Christmas, they have a home.

“We want local businesses to know that they can make a real difference to people facing homelessness this holiday season, through donation, volunteering and awareness-raising.

"Any small contribution could be the difference between someone being on the streets and having a home.”

This campaign, running from Diwali to New Year’s Day, hopes to raise £2,000 to help young adults like Rufus.

Huge response to hamper appeal

Just after last Christmas Rufus came to Nomad after being kicked out of his parents' house after he had come out as gay.

Nomad provided Rufus with a home in a training flat, where he could learn the skills to live independently.

He settled in quickly but suffered from mental health problems. Nomad referred him to an asset coach to explored his strengths, dreams and aspirations for the future - which was to one day move to Sweden to teach English.

His asset coach found him a Swedish learning resource and within a matter of weeks, Rufus was speaking complex Swedish sentences with confidence and flair.

With this new confidence, Rufus successfully applied for a place at university.

After a few months, Rufus had established a happy, loving relationship and was preparing to move into university accommodation.
