Firefighters were called to the blaze at Arthurs Skip Hire & Waste Management on Parkwood Road, Neepsend, at 9.50pm last night, Thursday, May 28.

Videos showed the fire raging ferociously, and thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles across the city, with firefighters warning people in the area to keep their windows closed.

Around 30 firefighters were battling the flames at the height of the blaze, and South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue this morning said two crewss remained at the scene, where the fire service said it was expected to be on site for a ‘quite a while’.

The fire service said the waste material which was alight covered an area of 10,000 square metres – equivalent to around 40 tennis courts.

A spokesman for the fire service said this morning shortly before 6.30am that it still had one main jet and one ground monitor in use, meaning ‘extensive firefighting activities’ were ongoing.

Reports suggested there were a number of gas canisters stored at the site but SYFR said it was unable to provide details about the nature of the material at this stage.

The cause remains unknown but SYFR said an investigation would take place once the fire is extinguished.

Streets Ahead, which is responsible for maintaining the city’s roads, said this morning that it had to close parts of Neepsend Lane and Hoyland Road due to the fire.
