Protest in Sheffield today will mark 100 days since death of George Floyd

Anti-racism campaigners in Sheffield are encouraging people in the city to kneel with them this afternoon to mark 100 days since the death of George Floyd.

Take The Knee will host the peaceful protest outside Sheffield train station at 5.50pm today (Wednesday, September 2).

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died in June after a police officer in Minneapolis held him down by pressing his knee into his neck.

His death sparked worldwide protests including a demonstration on Sheffield’s Devonshire Green, which was attended by thousands across the city.

A spokesperson for Take The Knee said: “This Wednesday will be the 100th day since George Floyd was murdered, and the wave of anti-racist global reaction exploded on to our streets in solidarity with all people of colour.

"The cameras have since turned away, so we formed Take The Knee and have been protesting safely and respecting distancing every Wednesday.

"Today we would love more people to support our cause and help others to understand that the time is now, and we demand systemic change.

"Give others lifts, tell a friend and friends of friends. Whatever privileges we all have, we need to put it into action.”
