The aircraft’s strange behaviour has left people around the city scratching their heads, with several people contacting The Star to say they had seen it in the skies above Walkley and Shirecliffe and one describing the plane as ‘doing laps around Sheffield’.

The flight-tracking website radarbox24.com shows a flight UKP152 circling numerous time over Sheffield, though it appears to have since headed north-east towards Hull.

The aircraft is listed as a Vulcanair P 68R Victor, which is understood to be operated by the National Police Air Service.

The flight tracker describes the plane as having departed Edinburgh on Saturday, February 1, at 4.22pm and scheduled to arrive at London Heathrow at 5.50pm, though this does not appear to tally with the live flight path data on the website.

The Star has contacted South Yorkshire Police and is awaiting more information.
