In pictures: How you marked VE Day in Sheffield

There were plenty of brilliant VE Day tributes in Sheffield as the city marked 75 years since the end of war in Europe on Friday.

Here’s some pictures showing how people in our city marked VE Day along with some background on each.

In Woodhouse, 88-year-old Madge Wolstenholme raised a glass from her driveway. Madge was evacuated to Budby, near Worksop, from her family flat on Button Lane just behind Atkinsons on the Moor that was destroyed during the December 12 1940 Blitz.

Meanwhile, to commemorate the 'stay at home VE day celebrations', residents of Armthorpe Road, Bramwith Road and Carr Bank Lane created a Museum of the Street. Medals, photographs and other items related to WWII were displayed on garden walls to tell a very personal story of the conflict.

Shaun Kendall, the standard-bearer for the Royal Engineers Association, was at the Kiveton Park war memorial at 11.00am on Friday for a minute’s silence. As he walked away from the memorial he saw an elderly lady – Milly – knocking on her bedroom window to get his attention.

Residents told Shaun Milly’s late husband was a Pathfinder who was lost over Germany. Shaun then raised his standard again and stood with it at his side while he saluted.
