Panda family at new Sheffield development given names rooted in Steel City history by Star readers
and live on Freeview channel 276
Last month, the team behind the £66 million development at St Mary’s Gate asked readers of The Star to provide names for the three pandas which were recently installed on the roof, on a pillar and on a bench at ground level.
After a fantastic response which saw readers send in dozens of different names, Star editor Nancy Fielder was asked to make the final, difficult decision.

The term Little Mester refers to a master craftsman working on a small scale – famously in small cutlery workshops in Sheffield.
The second panda, which can be seen clambering up the side of a pillar, is to be known as Coe Coe – a play on the name of the city’s adopted Olympian, Seb Coe.
And finally, the giant rooftop panda that weighs an impressive 1,350kg is to be known as Hendo, named after our famous relish of course.

“So, we are thrilled to see that the winning panda names reflect a little bit of Sheffield’s special heritage and personality.”
The pandas - which are a symbol of friendship and peace in Chinese culture - were designed by David Wei of Hatch Architects and lifted into place by construction contractor Bowmer + Kirkland.
Hendo, who sits atop the development's tallest tower, has quickly become a popular new addition to the Sheffield skyline, with dozens of photos of him being shared on social media site Instagram.
