The gym is based at Thrybergh Academy sports hall. Regular users have been told that they will not be able to use the facilities after December 31 this year.

Members of the gym who will no longer have access to it are starting a petition to try and keep the gym open to all.

Thrybergh resident Will Walker said: “As a member of Thrybergh sports hall gym I am dismayed to hear from a member of staff that the sports hall is too close.

“The sports hall is a beacon of light for the community with, gym classes, climbing walls, archery and badminton and is used by all ages of the community from children to pensioners.

“I am a subscription member of which I have been told there is nearly 200 subscriptions members and nearly 150 who use the gym on a pay as you go basis.”

Rotherham Council said that although the building housing the gym is leased from the council, the Academy owns the gym equipment and the decision to close the facility to the public is entirely down to them.

Thrybergh Academy and Sports centre staff have declined to comment.

Thrybergh sports hall and gym is currently still open to the public and includes a bouldering room, a gym and fitness classes.
