But the 70-year-old has now formally retired and Martyn Kemp Opticians, which operates from nine locations across Sheffield and Rotherham, has been passed over to his son, Alex Kemp and his business partners.

Alex followed in his father's footsteps and set up his own venture, The Eye Place, which has branches across London, Dore and Bakewell, before taking over the family business.

"Technology is at the forefront of businesses now and that is what businesses need to invest in."

The business originally started from humble beginnings in 1975, with Martyn operating from inside a portakabin on Herries Road.

It was there that the entrepreneur built up his client base, before purchasing a house to move the practice to.

Martyn Kemp Opticians progressed to have 10 different sites across the city at its peak.

"In a typical day for my father he would sit in a dark room and work for hours on his own and see the patients he has seen for many years,” Alex added.

"He has cared for generations of the same families, in some families he has seen four different generations."

The passion for eye care is something that has been passed down in the Kemp family - with Martyn's own father having trained as an optician when he was growing up.

Alex added: "For him to see a patient he once saw in the 80s, with their children, just shows it's his caring nature and how he looks after them.

"He became a family name in Sheffield because he's been there so long.

"I look forward to him having a more relaxing life now he doesn't have to work everyday.

"As a company and as his son, I am wishing him an enjoyable and long retirement and thank him for everything he's done."
