Mary, who is a resident at Knowle Hill Residential Care Home - one of the ten sites operated throughout the city by charity Sheffcare - celebrated her hundredth birthday on April 3.

One of six children - she had four brothers and a sister - Mary grew up in the Hollinsend Road area of Gleadless and was a pupil at Hollinsend School.

She married husband Jimmy on Christmas Eve 1949 at Sheffield Register Office and the couple went on to have two children, daughter Marie and son Jimmy.

Today Mary has a grandson Wayne and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca, as well as two great grandchildren, Alex and Abigail.

Mary is a lovely lady and it is a pleasure to be able to care for her,” said Knowle Hill manager Diane Harrison.

“Current circumstances meant that we couldn’t have the celebrations the family had planned for her but that doesn’t mean Mary did not know how loved and appreciated she is.”
