Undeterred by Covid-19 restrictions, Stone Street residents came together to celebrate VE day.

Linda Taylor organised the street party when the original event, being arranged by St Mark’s Church and The Joseph Stone Centre, was cancelled.

She said: “All the churches, Mosborough History Group and The Salvation Army had come together to organise an event for the village, so I sent a letter to everyone on the street so we can trim the street up.”

The junction of High Street and Station Road was also decorated.

Linda said: “It’s been a great opportunity for everyone to get together and get a community feeling through this event.”

Serving soldier Josh Roberts, aged 26, was among those to attend.

He said: “It’s great to have a community on this road. I’ve spoken to my friends on base and around the country and they're jealous, they’ve got nothing like this.

“Today’s not only for remembering VE Day.

Soldiers from my unit and other servicemen still dying for the freedoms we have today. We’ve got freedom today from wars still being fought today.”

Victory in Europe Day is the day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War Two of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, May 8, 1945, marking the end of World War II in Europe.
