Lulu’s tragic passing comes after nearly four years battling a rare form of bone cancer, which led to her lower left leg being amputated just months after her diagnosis at the age of 15.

In a statement, Sheffield Rugby Union Football Club said of Lulu, who played with the club’s girls section, the Swans: “It is with immense sadness that the club shares the news of the passing of the incredibly inspirational, Lulu Blundell, following her battle with cancer. There will be applause before our next Mens and Womens home games to both remember and celebrate Lulu.

“Following her diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer, the inspirational Lulu raised awareness and thousands of pounds for Teenage Cancer Trust. A JustGiving page has been set up in Memory of Lulu where you can donate to Teenage Cancer Trust who were with her and her family every step of the way.”

Lulu raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Weston Park Hospital over the years following her diagnosis with Ewing’s sarcoma. Only in September last year, Lulu took part in a fundraising run after being told earlier in the summer that her cancer had returned.

In a tribute shared in Sheffield RUFC’s statement, Lulu’s parents, Stephen and Carolyn Blundell, said: “Whilst our hearts are so very heavy at this time both my husband and I will treasure every minute of the 19 years Lulu spent with us. She taught us all so very much about how to make the most of every moment and how important a smile, a kiss, and a hug could be in transforming your day. She showed us that regardless of the challenge rising to it with dignity and determination was the only option.

“It is no coincidence that she was a rugby player – representing both Wakefield Trinity and Sheffield Swans and one of her saddest moments was knowing she would no longer be able to play.

“She was made honorary vice president of Sheffield Rugby Union Football Club and it was almost inevitable then that once at university she would secure a part time position in sales and ticketing with Newcastle Falcons. She loved her job at the Falcons and the generosity and support from all clubs has been wonderful. I know she massively appreciated the show of support, the promotion of fund raising for a charity very close to our hearts, and the love. Thank you.”

Emily Glendenning, Womens chair at Sheffield RUFC, said in a tribute: “Clearly the traits that made her such a popular teammate and fierce player (including but not limited to being so headstrong, brave, and full of joy) were transferable to they way she tackled “THE BAS**** CANCER” as she once called it.

“Lulu was an inspiration to us all and we followed her journey closely, offering our support in whatever way we could – not that she needed it! Lulu raised tens of thousands of pounds for Teenage Cancer Trust through relentless, and sometimes gruelling, fundraising efforts. What an icon.”
